The plunger type of coffee maker has been often acknowledged as being created in mid-19th century france, but it was an Italian, Attilo Calimani tok out a patent on this device. A cicular mesh filter is plunged into a cylinder jug containing coffee, coarsely ground, and hot water. The filter ensures that the coffee grounds remain at the bottom of the container, and do not spoil the cup of coffee. Another version of the deice was pateneted in 1958 by Faliero Bondanini. In the 1960’s a British company, Household Articles, brought out a chrome design, which is the version most widely used in the UK today. In different parts of the world, the device is known by several different names: the plunger pot, the french press and in France, the cafetiere a piston. In Britain it is widely known as the cafetiere, which reflects the presence of the leading maker La Cafetiere, the brand that makes the most popular chrome versions.
