Global GS-1800S Combination Water Whetstone (GS-1800S)
An alternative or supplement to using a sharpening steel is to make use of a whetstone and Global have made available various types and sizes which are suitable.
The water whetstone is a combination whetstone with two different sides for different sharpening purposes. The first side has a 240 grit stone for rough sharpening; when flipped it over the 1000 grit stone polishes the blade to perfection.
It comes with a rubber holding base.
A medium grit is sufficient but if the blade is blunt or damaged it may be necessary to start with a rougher grit.
Whetstones need to be soaked for at least five minutes before sharpening and kept wet as this ensures the best results. The rubber base enables the whetstone to remain firmly on the worksurface while polishing and hence keeping you safe.
